Most garage doors will not go up if there is a broken spring. If your garage door opener will only lift the door a few inches off of the ground and then stops automatically, this is a sign of a broken spring. When a garage door is counter-balanced correctly, you should be able to lift it very easily. If your garage door is abnormally heavy or wants to slam to the ground, this is also a sign of a broken spring.

On garage doors with torsion springs, the springs will most likely be mounted on the header, above the garage door opening. This is best viewed from the inside of the garage with the door closed. If there is a visible gap in the black coil spring and the steel bar can be seen between the spring coils, this is a broken torsion spring. Extension springs stretch down the sides of the horizontal garage door track. Most often the garage door will go crooked when there is a broken extension spring. If you see a spring hanging from the cables up in the air on the side of the tracks, this is a broken extension spring.
